The concept of freedom of speech and its importance

Freedom of speech provides you the right to say what you want without being censored. It is considered to be one of the most important rights that a person can have and is enshrined in the constitution of almost every country. That being said the amount of freedom of speech that people have varies from one place to the next. In general countries that do not allow a free and fair democracy to exist also put restrictions on peoples freedom of speech.

The main reason that free speech is so important is that a democracy can't function without it. The democratic process is based on doing what the majority of people want done. This however requires that people be able to make an informed choice about what should be done. This requires that free speech be allowed so that there is a free flow of information and that people can know what they are voting for and why. Without the freedom of speech democracy could not function properly since the people who control what is being said will be able to control the results of the election.

The other reason that free speech is so important is that it helps to prevent tyranny and corruption. If elected officials or others with power are doing something that is wrong free speech allows you to say so. This allows us to keep a watch on what our leaders are doing and makes it more difficult for them to get away with doing things they shouldn't be doing. This is why in countries that have dictators there is almost never free speech, the source of their power is that the people really don't know what they are doing.

While free speech is important it is not unlimited, even in the most democratic of countries. This is because there are other important rights besides those of free speech and some times they conflict with each other. A good example of this would be the right to privacy, people cannot say anything that they want about you, it has to actually be true. In addition there are rules that prohibit speech that promotes hate against a particular group. There are also restrictions on free speech when it may cause a safety issue, like yelling fire in a crowded theatre.

Over the last few years free speech has taken a bit of a beating even in democratic countries. This is mainly due to the spread of the internet. The internet has made it much easier for people to communicate and spread ideas. Most governments however have taken steps to restrict what is being said online. This has created an interesting situation that is likely to get worse. For some reason people are much more willing to accept restrictions on their freedom of speech online than they are in other forums.
